PAINTINGS

I work in a wide variety of materials, concepts, and styles in the studio. Because of this, I like to work in series to develop consistency within certain styles and bodies of work. Series help me to refine the work, the materials, and it helps my audience follow along with the theme or aesthetic that I’m pursuing.

For better or worse, I have always bounced around with different materials and themes. If I’m creating a lot of direct paintings in acrylic, for instance, I’ll often get the itch to go work in layers of transparent watercolors or start pushing graphite dust around. There are just so many interesting materials and ways of seeing the world through art. Exploring these possibilities has always intrigued and inspired me as an artist.

Different ways of painting involves different ways of thinking. This involves the way that I think about my materials, their advantages and their limitations, as well as my subject matter and also the way that I’m seeing the world. Does the mood change? The perception of the object, or the idea?

There are seemingly infinite ways to portray objects or ideas within the two-dimensional plane. Exploring these ways of seeing, or thinking, provides me with inspiration and wonder. It is my hope that this inspiration and wonder is somehow transferred to the audience that views my work. ‘Paint’ might be my medium, but my work is more about seeing and thinking about the world through visual means.
